Super Bowl Commercial Features Deaf Actors

During the commercials that run just prior to the beginning of the Super Bowl, PepsiCo will be airing a commercial that is performed completely in Sign Language by Deaf performers. The two characters featured in the commercial are not professional actors but instead Deaf PepsiCo employees.

Bobbie Scoggins, President of the NAD, had the following thoughts about the ad; "The NAD applauds PepsiCo for its strong commitment to diversity and empowerment through the creation of this exciting ad in ASL with its employees. This ground-breaking ad creatively uses humor to provide a glimpse of deaf culture and heightened awareness to millions of Super Bowl Sunday viewers."

New Law to Fight Discrimination

Beginning January 1st, any New York resident who falls under the ADA umbrella, including the Deaf community, will have another resource in the fight against discrimination. Individuals who feel they have been discriminated against can now take their case to the State Division of Human Rights rather than personally initiating a lawsuit.

The DHR provides two major advantages to its clients. Beyond being specifically trained in discrimination cases, the DHR is also free of charge to individuals with legitimate claims. This applies specifically to situations where an organization or company refuses to make reasonable accommodations to support the Deaf community.

Khoros Performing Arts Company for Kids

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Patricia Rickard-Lauri, Director of Khoros Performing Arts Company for Kids. She has a wonderful program for deaf and hearing children, teaching them performing arts (and sign language to the hearing kids). Patricia has an excitement and passion to see the program develop with young deaf people as mentors in the program. To view their scheduled performances or for more information, please visit their website: www.khoroskids.com. Enjoy! ~Theresa
