Providing Spoken Language Interpretation
Empire Interpreting Service™ has two options available to our customers when providing
Spoken Language Interpreting.
Consecutive Interpretation is most commonly known as interpretation where each party takes turns to deliver a message, allowing both parties the opportunity to clarify ambiguities, confusion, or unclear dialogue.
For example, in medical interpreting, consecutive interpreting begins after the source language speaker has ended a sentence or short phrase. Once the source language speaker delivers a message, the speaker will pause to allow the Interpreter to deliver the message, as precisely it was delivered, into the target language. The Limited English Proficient (LEP) individual may ask questions directed back to the source language speaker, or the source language speaker will continue to progress in their message delivery, until there are questions.
Professional interpreters develop a keen sense of attention to detail in listening skills and memory, while retaining an entire dialogue. Often times however, it is common that an Interpreter will take notes to ensure the most accurate and fluid communication.
With Consecutive Interpretation, the Interpreter will position themselves in between and to the side of the target and source language speakers, for the most effective interpretation.
This mode of interpretation is generally the most cost effective and is most commonly used for short appointments, one-on-one meetings, medical environments, etc. It is recommended to plan accordingly by allowing extra time for communication due to the required turn taking between parties.
Simultaneous Interpretation has a slightly delayed deliverance of a message. In this scenario, the Interpreter begins interpreting immediately after the first party begins to speak; interpreting the message simultaneously into the target language.
Simultaneous Interpreters work as teams of two or more depending on the length of the assignment. Unlike consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting takes place in real time were the linguists transmit the interpretations to the listeners while the original speech continues uninterrupted. Such a method generally involves simultaneous interpreting equipment such as portable transmitter(s), tabletop, or full-sized booth(s), headsets, and microphones, depending upon your needs.
Simultaneous interpretation is the preferred method of interpretation for environments that are pressed for time, requiring immediate, uninterrupted delivery of the message. Simultaneous interpretation is commonly used in courtrooms, conferences, meetings, trainings, media broadcasts, etc. These venues require simultaneous interpretation to avoid prolonging the deliverance of a dialogue, in order to keep on schedule and from distracting or interrupting a general audience.
Telephonic Interpretation is performed virtually through use of a phone conferencing system. Our Interpreter will be connected via telephone to you and your Limited English Proficient (LEP) consumer.
Telephonic Interpretation uses technology to our customers and consumers benefit, as your Interpreter can essentially be located thousands of miles away.
This method of interpretation is most commonly used for unplanned encounters, very brief meetings or interpreting requests where a qualified Interpreter in a particular language is not available locally.
Telephonic interpretation may not be the best option for your consumer if a procedure will be taking place or the meeting will be lengthy, in depth and requiring visual items to interpret such as a PowerPoint or paperwork.
